

The younger Fernando became a doctor like his mother, while Gonzalo went on to become an architect. In 1923, Matilde became a married woman when she exchanged her vows with lawyer Fernando Procel, going on to have two sons, Fernando and Gonzalo.

In 1921, Matilde obtained a Doctorate in Medicine, becoming the first woman in Ecuador to ever receive the title. Matilde went on to study at the University of Cuenca, studying medicine. Angel Rubén Ojeda agreed to let her study there.ĭespite this success, Matilde became something of a social pariah, as other daughters in the community were prevented by their mothers from spending time with her, while she was forced to listen at her local priest deliver mass two steps outside the Church.Ĭarmen vigorously defended her daughter, however, and Matilde's strength of character was rewarded when she graduated from the high school with honours, enabling her to continue her education. Matilde studied at the Immaculate Conception of the Sisters of Charity for her younger years before revealing to her older brother Antonio that she didn't wish to stop studying at the sixth grade - when other girls were expected to stop their education.Īntonio made a request to a secular high school named Colegio Bernardo Valdivieso for her to study there, and after much deliberation - over a month of considering - the school's director Dr. Born in 1989 in Loja, Ecuador, Matilde was one of six children born to Juan Manuel Hidalgo and Carmen Navarro.įollowing Juan's death, Carmen worked hard as a seamstress to support her six children.
